What cosmetic ingredients should be avoided?

What cosmetic ingredients should be avoided?

The world of the beauty industry is evolving rapidly: new formulas, trendy ingredients, and innovative textures appear every year. But along with high-quality cosmetics, there are still products on the market that contain ingredients that can irritate the skin, dry it out, or cause allergic reactions. People with sensitive, reactive or problematic skin should be especially careful.

Below is a list of the most common unwanted components that you should pay attention to when choosing care products.

1. 1. Parabens

Methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl parabens are used as preservatives. Although they are effective in extending the shelf life of cosmetics, studies suspect them of having hormonal effects.
Why you should avoid it:

  • can disrupt hormonal balance;

  • sometimes provoke irritation and redness.

Alternatives: phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate.

2. SLS and SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate)

They are used in foams, shampoos, and shower gels. They provide abundant foam but have an aggressive effect.
Why they are undesirable:

  • dry out the skin and hair;

  • destroy the lipid barrier;

  • provoke itching and peeling with frequent use.

Choose products with Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside or other mild surfactants.

3. Mineral oil and petroleum jelly (Petrolatum)

These are petrochemical products that create a dense film on the skin.
Disadvantages:

  • can clog pores;

  • interfere with the normal breathing of the skin;

  • not suitable for oily and combination skin.

The best options: natural oils (jojoba, avocado, grape seed).

4. Artificial flavors (Fragrance / Parfum)

These are the components that most often cause allergies.
Dangers:

  • irritation, rashes;

  • tearing and headaches in sensitive people;

  • dozens of chemicals may be hidden in the composition.

Choose products labeled Fragrance-free or with natural essential oils in minimal concentrations.

5. Formaldehyde and its donors (Formaldehyde, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea)

They are used as preservatives but are potentially toxic.
Why they are dangerous:

  • can cause allergic reactions;

  • irritation of the skin and mucous membranes;

  • carcinogenic in high concentrations.

6. Phthalates

Often hidden in flavors.
Their action:

  • hormonal disorders;

  • risks to the reproductive system;

  • possible allergic reactions.

Avoid products labeled DEP, DBP, DEHP.

7. Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane)

Silicones create a smooth texture on the skin and hair, but can accumulate.
Cons:

  • clog pores;

  • form a film that prevents the penetration of active ingredients;

  • provoke the appearance of comedones.

Switch to "permeable" silicones or natural substitutes (squalane, oils).

8. Alcohol (Alcohol Denat.)

Not to be confused with "fatty alcohols" (cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol), which are safe.
Why you should avoid it:

  • severe dehydration;

  • irritation;

  • destruction of the skin's protective barrier.

It is especially harmful in toners and mattifying products.

9. Talc

It may contain traces of impurities (asbestos) if it is not sufficiently cleaned.
Risks:

  • skin irritation;

  • possible clogging of pores;

  • is dangerous for people with sensitive skin and acne.

10. Oxybenzone in sunscreens

One of the most controversial UV filters.
Disadvantages:

  • potential hormonal effects;

  • allergic reactions;

  • photosensitivity.

Sunscreen alternatives: tetracyclodicazane, Mexoryl SX/XL, Tinosorb S/M, mineral filters ZnO, TiO₂.

Conclusion: how to choose cosmetics safely?

  • Read the composition and pay attention to the first 5-7 components - they form the basis of the product.

  • Give preference to brands with a transparent formula and minimalism.

  • Remember that "natural" ≠ "safe" - even plant extracts can cause allergies.

  • Choose your care individually: each skin type has its own prohibited ingredients.
