What cosmetic ingredients should you avoid?

What cosmetic ingredients should you avoid?

The beauty industry is evolving rapidly: new formulas, trending ingredients, and innovative textures emerge every year. But alongside high-quality cosmetics, there are still products on the market that contain ingredients which can irritate the skin, dry it out, or cause allergic reactions. People with sensitive, reactive, or problem skin should be especially careful.

Below is a list of the most common undesirable ingredients to watch out for when choosing skincare products.

1. Parabens

Methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl parabens are used as preservatives. Although they effectively extend the shelf life of cosmetics, studies suggest they may have hormonal effects.
Why you should avoid:

  • may disrupt hormonal balance;

  • sometimes cause irritation and redness.

Alternatives: phenoxyethanol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate.

2. SLS and SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate)

Used in body washes, shampoos, and shower gels. They produce a rich lather but can be harsh on the skin.
Why they are undesirable:

  • dry out the skin and hair;

  • damage the lipid barrier;

  • cause itching and flaking with frequent use.

Choose products containing cocamidopropyl betaine, decyl glucoside, or other mild surfactants.

3. Mineral oil and petrolatum

These are petrochemical products that form a thick film on the skin.
Disadvantages:

  • can clog pores;

  • interfere with the skin's ability to breathe;

  • are not suitable for oily or combination skin.

Best options: natural oils (jojoba, avocado, grape seed).

4. Artificial fragrances (Fragrance / Parfum)

It is these ingredients that most often cause allergies.
Dangers:

  • irritation, rash;

  • watery eyes and headaches in sensitive individuals;

  • There may be dozens of hidden chemicals in the product.

Choose products marked with Fragrance-free or with natural essential oils in minimal concentrations.

5. Formaldehyde and its donors (Formaldehyde, DMDM Hydantoin, Imidazolidinyl Urea)

They are used as preservatives, but they are potentially toxic.
Why are they dangerous:

  • may cause allergic reactions;

  • irritation of the skin and mucous membranes;

  • In high concentrations, they are carcinogenic.

6. Phthalates

They are often hidden in the ingredients of flavorings.
Their effects:

  • hormonal imbalances;

  • risks to the reproductive system;

  • Possible allergic reactions.

Avoid products labeled DEP, DBP, DEHP.

7. Silicones (Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane)

Silicones create a smooth texture on the skin and hair, but they can build up.
Cons:

  • clog the pores;

  • form a film that prevents the active ingredients from penetrating;

  • cause blackheads to form.

Switch to «permeable» silicones or natural alternatives (squalane, oils).

8. Alcohol (Alcohol Denat.)

Do not confuse these with «fatty alcohols» (cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol), which are safe.
Why you should avoid:

  • severe dehydration;

  • irritation;

  • damage to the skin's protective barrier.

It is particularly harmful in toners and mattifying products.

9. Talc

May contain traces of impurities (asbestos) if not sufficiently purified.
Risks:

  • skin irritation;

  • possible clogging of pores;

  • not suitable for people with sensitive skin or acne.

10. Oxybenzone in sunscreen products

Some of the most controversial UV filters.
Disadvantages:

  • potential hormonal effects;

  • allergic reactions;

  • photosensitivity.

Sun protection alternatives: tetracyclodican, Mexoryl SX/XL, Tinosorb S/M, mineral filters ZnO, TiO₂.

Conclusion: How can you choose cosmetics safely?

  • Read the ingredients list and pay attention to the first 5–7 ingredients—they form the basis of the product.

  • Choose brands with transparent formulas and minimalist packaging.

  • Remember that «natural» ≠ «safe»—even plant extracts can cause allergies.

  • Choose your skincare routine based on your individual needs: every skin type has its own list of ingredients to avoid.
